How to Create a Light and Airy Dining Room

Are you feeling lost on where to begin with styling your dining room? In this post I have the 6 best tips on how to create a light and airy dining room. These tips are quite simple, but once all together make big difference. Follow along and  you are bound to have a stunning dining area for all of your family and friends to enjoy!

1. Select Neutral Paint Options

Paint is one of the easiest ways to transform a space. If you are aiming for a light and airy feeling I suggest sticking to neutrals. Selecting a neutral shade creates the perfect base for your room allowing you the freedom to easily switch out other pieces from time to time. While there are TONS of shades to choose from I have rounded up a few popular selections that would look great in any dining room.

2. Add a Bench to your Dining Set

When it comes to selecting furniture for your room there really is no right or wrong. You can either choose a darker dining set for a nice contrast against your neutral walls or you can select a lighter wood dining set to keep with that light and airy feel. One thing that I do suggest though is adding a bench to your dining set. I have found that incorporating a bench into your set helps create an open space feeling in the room without having to compromise seating.

3. Keep your Wall Decor Simple

This is especially helpful if you have a small dining area. Having too much on your walls can make your room feel small and cluttered. I love incorporating mirrors into dining rooms (or any room as a matter of fact) because they create the illusion of a larger space. Adding a large shelf underneath your mirror along with some simple decor pieces can be just enough to make a statement without creating an overwhelming look/feel.  If you have a larger space to work with a gallery wall is also a great idea that can serve as your main focal point.

4. Add Greenery

Greenery is a great way to take up empty space and add a pop of color back into the room. If you do not consider yourself a paint mom, faux greenery is always an option. These days there are several companies that market very realistic faux greenery at various price points.

5. Select Light-Filtering Curtains and be Mindful of Curtain Rod Placement

If you have glass doors or large windows in your dining space adding curtains can create a cozier atmosphere. I recommend placing your curtain rod as high and wide as you possibly can to create the illusion of a larger room. To keep as much daylight entering through your windows, choosing light filtering curtains can help maintain that bright and airy feel.

6. Consider a Flat Weave Rug

Flat weave or even short-pile rugs tend to have an overall simpler look versus fluffy and plush rugs. Not to mention they are also easier to clean. To ensure that your room looks well put together, make it a point to select an appropiate rug size. Generally speaking, you want your rug to have plenty of room on each side of your dining set, even when the chairs are pushed back.
